What is the point of learning about prime numbers

I see prime numbers so much. What is really the point of them and how are they significant? Are they just special numbers we have?

It comes back to the unique factorization theorem you may have heard. Don't forget the Chinese Remainder Theorem and the Classification Theorem for Finite Abelian Groups.
